Course Description:

English at the sophomore level emphasizes the genres of novel and nonfiction. At this level there is continuation of other areas of literature, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary development, spelling and research. The emphasis in composition is on expository writing.

Unit Descriptions:

Literature

A. Literary terms

B. Probable novels/drama: To Kill a Mockingbird, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Lord of the Flies, The Pigman, The Book Thief – other titles approved for English II by the Helena school district are also possible depending on availability of selections

C. Short stories, nonfiction, and poetry selected from the English II literature textbook: The Language of Literature, McDougal/Littell

Writing

A. A variety of different types of writing, mostly focusing on the five-paragraph essay, including personal essays and expository essays accompanying literature

B. Research paper

Vocabulary

A. Terms from assigned reading

Grammar

A. Daily Oral Language (DOL) that will cover root words, prefixes and suffixes, spelling rules, punctuation, and other topics geared toward improving language skills

B. More in-depth coverage of grammar on an as-needed basis, largely reflecting issues that arise in students’ work

Grading Scale:

91 – 100 =A 78 – 79.99 = C+
90 – 91.99 = A- 72 – 77.99 = C
88 – 89.99 = B+ 70 – 71.99 = C-
82 – 87.99 = B 68 – 69.99 = D+
80 – 81.99 = B- 62 – 67.99 = D
60 – 61.99 = D-
59.99 AND BELOW = F
