English III Class Syllabus -- Mrs. Stoner
This syllabus is an outline of the year ahead. It is subject to change due to availability of literature.
- Literature: Numerous genres of American literature will be covered, including Puritanism/Colonialism, Romanticism, Realism, Transcendentalism, and Modernism.
A. Literary terms (MT literature standards 1 and 2; MT reading standards 1 and 2*)
B. Probable novels/drama: Of Mice and Men, The Crucible, The Things They Carried, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
C. Short stories, nonfiction, poetry, journals, speeches, and essays selected from English 3 literature anthology (see standards above)
- Writing
A. A variety of different types of five-paragraph papers including personal essays, persuasive essays, in-class writing, and papers accompanying literature (MT writing standards 1-6)
B. Research paper (see standards above)
- Vocabulary: words accompanying literature (MT reading standards 1-3; MT literature standards 1 and 2)
- Grammar: Daily Oral Language (D.O.L.) that will cover root words, prefixes and suffixes, spelling rules, punctuation, and other topics geared toward improving language skills; more in-depth coverage of grammar on an as-needed basis (MT writing standards 1 and 2)

Grading: The grading scale for the English department is as follows:
