English III Class Syllabus -- Mrs. Stoner
This syllabus is an outline of the year ahead. It is subject to change due to availability of literature.
Semester 1
- Literature: Modernism and Puritanism/Colonialism
A. Novel: Of Mice and Men (MT literature standards 1-5; MT reading standards 1-5*)
B. Selected short stories, journals, speeches, and essays from junior literature anthology (same as above)
C. Drama: The Crucible (same as above)
- Writing: five-paragraph papers, including some related to literature, persuasive writing, personal essays, and in-class writing assignments; research paper (MT writing standards 1-6)
- Grammar: Punctuating literary citations in essays using MLA format**
- Vocabulary: literary terms and terms that will accompany literature to enhance students’ vocabulary (MT reading standards 1-3; MT literature standards 1 and 2)
Semester 2
- Literature: Romanticism, Transcendentalism, and Realism
A. Selected short stories and poetry from junior literature anthology (same as literature listings above)
B. Novels: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (same as literature listings above)
- Writing: five-paragraph papers, including some related to literature, persuasive writing, personal essays, and in-class writing assignments (MT writing standards 1-6)
- Grammar: using the semicolon and points of ellipses
- Vocabulary: will accompany literature to enhance students’ vocabulary (same as vocabulary listing above)

**General grammar concerns will be addressed throughout the year as needed.
Grading: The grading scale for the English department is as follows:
